Friends sale Saturday

The Friends of the Library will hold a special book sale on Sat., Feb. 4, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the large meeting room. This sale will feature an overstock of books, CDs and DVDs too numerous to fit into the Book Ends used book store, which is open during library hours and located just inside the entrance.

The Friends now sell Book Ends Bucks – gift certificates sold in one dollar increments and a sweet gift for the reader in your family!

The Friends group underwrites all library programming and meets next on Feb. 23 at 1 p.m. New members are always welcome.

Winter Reading Fun @ WNPL

Children in grades K-12 are invited to sign up for the Chicago Wolves Read to Succeed Winter Reading Program on-line, in the library or on the Bookmobile. Read 600 minutes before February 25th to earn a free book and grand prize drawing entry. We are also hosting a visit with Chicago Wolves’ player Matt Clackson on Tuesday February 21st at 7pm. He’ll talk about the importance of reading and explain how reading and education play a part in his life as a professional athlete. Then both children & adults can stick around to try our sockey hockey shoot-out just for fun! Register EVERYONE who is attending.

Adults also have their own Winter Reading Club. Sign-up on-line or stop at the reference desk or Bookmobile to sign up and receive your winter reading log. Just read 5 books and submit and entry in the weekly drawing. All submissions will be added for our grand prize drawing on February 25.

Teen grades 6-12 aren’t left out of the fun either. This Saturday, Janurary 28th, is the Teen Read-A-Thon from 1-5pm. Spread out in our large meeting room with your own books or chose from the library’s newest titles. Bring sleeping bags and pillows. Hot chocolate and s’mores will be served . Hourly drawing for gift cards and free books for everyone!

Library closing 5pm today due to severe weather conditions

The library is closed as of 5pm Friday due to severe winter weather. No materials will be due during this closure and the book returns will be limited for safety reasons.

Please remember that the library is available anytime your computer is online. In addition to the databases and catalog, you can also log on to manage your account, renew and request items, and register for programs.

Meet sweet cookbook author Kim Ima

Kim Ima, baker extraordinare, will visit WNPL on Tues., Jan. 24, at 7pm to discuss her new book, The Treats Truck Baking Book: Cookies, Brownies & Goodies Galore! A winner of the Vendy Award for Best Dessert Vendor, the creator of The Treats Truck can be found baking and dreaming up new treats at The Treats Truck Stop. She will be demonstrating her style for visitors.

Books will be available from Lake Forest Book Store. Registration is required.

SOPA/PIPA Web Blackouts

On Wed., Jan. 18, 2012, many popular web sites, such as Wikipedia and Reddit, became temporarily inaccessible as a protest against two bills currently being considered by the U.S. House and Senate, SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) and PIPA (Protect IP Act). The WNPL website remained up and running as usual on Jan. 18, as was our extensive collection of online databases for your research needs.

Don’t Allow Tax Time To Become Taxing…

Our library has received a very limited supply of specific Federal tax forms and instructions so far, but we are expecting the delivery of additional Federal and Illinois tax forms within the next few weeks. Please feel free to check our tax form display in our lobby. In the meantime, most forms and instructions are available on both the IRS and Illinois Department of Revenue websites and can be accessed from our Federal and State Tax Information page, along with relevant phone numbers for the IRS and IL Dept. of Revenue.

For more help with taxes, volunteers from AARP will be at WNPL on Mondays and Fridays, Friday, February 3^rd – Friday, April 13^th, 2012. AARP volunteers will be in Meeting Rooms A & B to offer tax preparation assistance to the elderly and needy from 9 a.m. to 12 (noon) on a first come, first served basis. They are able to prepare federal and Illinois state taxes.

WNPL has many resources to help you achieve these goals, including fitness and diet books, music CDs to exercise or relax to, and exercise DVDs. In addition to materials to check out, we also offer WNPL cardholders online access to the Health and Wellness Resource Center (or HWRC) available from our Databases page. Search HWRC using the terms ‘exercise’ or ‘weight loss’ and you’ll find thousands of articles on these and related topics. HWRC is also a great resource for researching medical conditions, drugs and other health related topics. Just another way that our library can help you towards your goals of a healthier new year!

Friday Night at the Movies

Are you nostalgic about the 1970′s, a conspiracy theorist, or a fan of the movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind? Or perhaps you’re curious to see the Library’s newly renovated Meeting Room, complete with a built in movie screen? If so, register for First Friday Films to attend a program you won’t want to miss.

This Friday night Melissa and Don Henderson return to host First Friday Films, where the newly released film Super 8 will be shown, lively conversations will ensue and refreshments will be served. Super 8 takes place in the summer of 1979 when a group of small-town kids document inexplicable events while making a super 8 movie, uncovering something more mysterious than any of them could have imagined.

Super 8 is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of sci-fi action & violence, language and some drug use. This program is an after-hours adult (ages 18 and up) program, with library doors open from 6:45 to 7:15pm.

Did you know that WNPL offers our cardholders access to thousands of downloadable e-books and e-audiobooks via our MyMediaMall site? By preparing and following a few simple steps, you can begin using your new gadget with our e-services in no time!

Here are a few quick tips from staff for getting ‘up and running’ with your new e-reader or other electronic device(s) used for e-books and e-audiobooks:

1) Know your device—most e-readers, tablets and other electronics have a manual or instruction book included or have online instructions available. Before attempting to download materials to your device, it’s helpful for users to have a basic idea of controls and functions for your specific device. Realize that many devices require access to a home computer for initial set-up, and often, need access for downloading.

2) Check to be sure that your device is compatible with MyMediaMall. Take a look at the following link to determine if your device (and/or device model) is compatible with our e-download service.

3) Take a look at the tutorials at the MyMediaMall/Overdrive website—Take the ‘Digital Media Guided Tour’ pictured on the left hand side of the MyMediaMall site, or also available from this link. In just a few minutes, you can learn how to browse, check out, and download titles.

4) Review the MyHelp feature at the MyMediaMall/Overdrive website for your device—MyHelp (featured on the left hand side of the MyMediaMall page) will guide you through the process of knowing what software or steps will be needed to begin downloading e-books or e-audiobooks to your device, and direct links to necessary software are provided there.

5) Need more help? Feel free to call or stop in and speak to one of our friendly staff members at the Reference or Children’s & Programming desks. Also ask about e-device practice sessions offered at our library.

New Year’s Holiday Weekend Hours

Our Library will be closed for the New Year’s holidays on Sat. and Sun., Dec. 31 and Jan. 1. The drive-up book return will also be closed on the holidays to prevent overflow. The return on the south side of the building will be open, however.

Winter library hours are Monday through Thursday: 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Friday: 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Saturday: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Sunday: 1 to 5 p.m. Library users are reminded that many resources are available around the clock at www.wnpl.info.

Candyland Bingo

Is your family getting a little stir crazy? Come to the library this Thursday, December 29th at 2pm for Candyland Bingo. Fun for all ages, each child will make a Bingo card to use during the game. Candies (like M&M’s) will be used as markers. Children must be accompanied by an adult and please register everyone who is attending.

The Vault Opens

WNPL’s newest space, designed by and dedicated to teens, is now open. Called The Vault, which was winner of a naming contest held this past summer, teens have access to computers, study areas, the combined young adult and high school collections, and in the future gaming equipment. The Vault is staffed Monday through Thursday, 3-9pm, Friday, 3-6pm, Saturday, 9am-5pm and Sunday, 1-5pm. The Vault and the WNPL Teen Advisory Group will host a Grand Opening Celebration on January, 7th at 1pm.

Family Movie Matinee

Join us this Wednesday, Dec. 21st at 1pm for a showing of the Academy award-winning movie, “Happy Feet” on our big screen in the Meeting Room. Bring your favorite snacks & drinks. Animal crackers will be provided. All children must be accompanied by an adult. No registration needed just drop-in!
