Wireless Technology

Q. How can I use wireless Internet at the Library?

A. Wireless access uses the WiFi standard (also known as IEEE 802.11b). Most users can simply bring their wireless-enabled laptop computer or other wireless device to the Library and turn it on. The computer will automatically recognize the wireless network.

If your device does not connect right away, please try the following:

Make sure your wireless adapter has been properly installed according to manufacturer’s instructions.

Use the management software that came with your wireless device to confirm that your configuration settings match the values below:

  • Network Name (SSID)- Public or ANY
  • Network Mode – infrastructure
  • WEP- disabled
  • IP or Network settings- DCHP enabled or obtain an IP address automatically
  • DNS- Obtain DNS address automatically
  • Gateway- No default gateway set–your card should detect it automatically.

Save any modified settings and restart your device as required.

If your laptop does not have wireless built-in, you will need to install a WiFi-compatible network device. The Library cannot guarantee your equipment will work with the Library’s network.

Q. How does it work?

A. Wireless access points located throughout the building communicate with your wireless device. You should be able to connect almost anywhere in the Library. When your wireless network card senses a signal, a message appears on the screen indicating a wireless network is available. Once your wireless card is connected you must open your web browser and wait a moment unit you see a security alert box. By selecting yes your browser will install a login certificate to connect to the library’s Internet Use Policy web page. From this web page you will be instructed on how to use the library wireless web.

Q. Can the Library help me configure my computer?

A. Sorry, everyone’s computer is different and you are responsible for knowing how to configure your own equipment. The Library cannot be responsible for any changes you make to your computer’s settings. If you need additional assistance, you may need to contact the hardware or software manufacturer.

Q. Where can I sit to pick up a stronger signal?

A. Wireless access points are located near the Reference Desk and the adult fiction area.

Q. Will I need any special settings or passwords to connect?

A. No special encryption settings, user names, or passwords are required.

Q. Is my information safe while using wireless?

A. Your information is not protected while using wireless, unless you are connected to a web page that employs encryption (stores, banks, etc.) Keep this in mind if you are accessing sensitive business or personal information.

Q. Are there any restrictions on my use of the Internet?

A. Wireless users agree to abide by the Library’s Internet Use By the Public policy, which prohibits abusive or illegal activity while using the Library’s Internet service. See the policy’s “Additional Rules Governing Wireless Access” section for more information. Wireless traffic is restricted to web browsing, FTP, and SMTP traffic only.

Q. Can I search the Library Catalog and special databases using wireless?

A. Yes. To search the Catalog, click on Library Catalog from the home page. To access special databases, click on Online Databases.
