The Warren-Newport Public Library is investing in significant improvements to create a more welcoming, functional, and engaging space for our community. We’re dedicating funds in the upcoming fiscal year to bring these exciting changes to life. Below you will find answers to common questions about the improvements, what to expect during construction, and how it may affect your visit.
What is “Our Library, Reimagined”?
This is our comprehensive facilities improvement project, which began with a space audit in May 2024. We’re transforming how our library serves the community by repositioning service desks, creating better collection displays, adding new seating and interactive spaces, and completely renovating our youth areas.
Why are you making all these changes?
A professional space audit revealed that our service desks were too far from where patrons needed help, our collections weren’t displayed for easy discovery, and our spaces could better serve our community’s needs. These improvements will make the library more user-friendly and accessible.
Who is involved in planning these changes?
We’re working with ThirdWay Space (the consultants who conducted our audit) and Engberg Anderson Architects. Our staff has also formed a Facilities Improvement Steering Committee and Core Task Force to guide the project, ensuring changes meet our community’s needs.
How much does this project cost?
The Board has approved approximately $244,000 for the August 2025 implementation (including shelving, service desks, café furniture, and marketplace shelving). An additional $1.5 million is allocated for the major youth area renovation and adult/teen furniture upgrades in Fiscal Year 2025/2026.
When will I see the major changes?
The first major transformations begin in August 2025, including new service desks, marketplace areas, and updated furniture in the café. The complete youth area renovation and adult/teen furniture upgrades will follow in Fiscal Year 2025/2026. This includes the Coco’s Cove interactive play space.
What changes can I see right now?
You can already enjoy our new privacy booths (Pillar Booths), relocated self-checkout stations, a new café area with seating, and collection shifts that have made room for upcoming improvements.
Will I still be able to get help from library staff during the changes?
Absolutely! In fact, you’ll find it easier to get help because our new service desks will be positioned closer to where you naturally need assistance. Staff will be available throughout the transition to help you navigate any temporary changes.
Will I still be able to check out books and use computers during construction?
Yes, we’re planning the implementation to minimize disruption to essential services. Some services may be temporarily relocated, but we’ll clearly communicate any changes in advance.
What if I can’t find something during the transition?
Please ask any staff member! We’re here to help you locate materials and navigate the changes. Some collections may be temporarily moved, but everything will be clearly marked, and staff will know where to find what you need.
Where will the teen collection be located?
The teen collection has been moved out of The Vault to create more open space for teens and is now housed near Adult Fiction.
What are the “marketplace” areas?
We’re creating three marketplace areas—Adult, Juvenile, and Preschool—designed to make browsing and discovering new materials much easier. Think of them as curated displays that highlight popular and new items right when you enter those sections.
What are privacy booths?
Our new Pillar Booths are small, enclosed spaces perfect for phone calls, virtual meetings, or focused individual work. They’re already installed and very popular with patrons! You can reserve them the same way as our study rooms. Visit our Study & Meeting Rooms page for details.
Is this the end of the changes?
The current plans will be implemented through Fiscal Year 2025/2026, but we’ll continue to evaluate and make improvements based on community feedback and changing needs.
