Torpedoed: the True Story of the World War II Sinking of “The Children’s Ship” by Deborah Heiligman

Heiligman, the author of “Vincent and Theo”, tells the true story of the sinking of the SS City of Benares in 1940, carrying 90 children from England on their way to safety in Canada.  As they made their way across the Atlantic, the ship was torpedoed by a German submarine, which later claimed it did not know there were children on board. This is a harrowing tale of heroism and survival of a little known incident at the beginning of World War II.
